Vintage Seiko Chronograph reference 6138-0017. The 6138 dual sub register, also known as the “big eye, small eye” was an iconic chronograph in Japan during the 1970’s. Nicknamed the UFO for it’s large size and round case shape, at 44mm, it’s a larger watch by any standard, but especially so given the smaller nature of watches during the 1970’s.

An excellent collector’s piece, this watch exhibits all of the right characteristics for a classic 6138-0017. The dial is excellent condition, showing no signs of discoloration or damage, with strong lume on all hour markers when viewed under UV light. Displayed between the hand stack and day/date wheel is the Suwa logo.

The “long sword” hands are in great condition, only showing mild discoloration towards the base of the minute hand. No chips or cracks to the lume, which glows very strongly under UV light.

The crystal on the watch has noticeable scratching throughout, but is original to the watch. Seiko’s service team determined the original crystal could remain on the watch. The watch was completely serviced by Seiko’s service center in September of 2022 and runs perfectly. The chronograph functions properly, and both pushers are in fantastic working condition with nice firm clicks.

The serial number on the case back dates this watch to a production date of April 1974
